New York Times critics review New York restaurants, from four-star dining rooms to neighborhood joints. At City Tamale, Israel Veliz serves slightly updated versions of his mother’s traditional Mexican tamales. Here, the tamales have a pure corny sweetness, and an ultra-fluffy dough that gets extra lift from the addition of baking soda. The chef Harold Moore is behind this homage to a nearly lost genre of restaurant: the small, discreet bistro with forehead-height curtains in the windows, Piaf on the speakers, chips on the china, and a menu dedicated to all the stuff nouvelle cuisine tried to kill. Jollibee, once a small suburban ice cream franchise in the Philippines, is now a global fast-food company with billions of dollars in annual revenue. At its 37th American outpost and first in Manhattan, it offers its signature Chickenjoy, fried chicken with skin as craggy as a thunderhead, crannies and crunch multiplying, and a peach-mango pie with a gilded sleeve of impeccably bubbled crust. At Lankan Filling Station, the chef O Tama Carey offers a menu of traditional Sri Lankan dishes, modified ever so slightly with modern touches.

Cherry Point is a north Brooklyn tavern that has very good food and an adventurous, affordable drinks list, but is trying to stay low-key about it all. Yuksel Akdas, who runs this Turkish restaurant with his wife, Hadice Akdas, has been cooking since he was 9 years old, helping out at his family’s restaurant in Istanbul. Cosme Aguilar, the chef, has been frying, blending and stirring mole de Piaxtla and other traditional Mexican dishes since Casa Enrique opened in 2012. In fact, he has barely changed his menu. Chefs from outside New York take turns in four- to six-month -long residencies.

The ground crew in the kitchen and dining room is provided by Union Square Hospitality Group, with its usual competence and good cheer. The Olive Jar and Capitano have a lot in common. Both restaurants are in Carlton, Melbourne’s historically Italian neighborhood. They sit almost directly across from each other, on Rathdowne Street, a couple of blocks off Carlton’s touristy main drag, Lygon Street, the center of Melbourne’s Little Italy. The Pigeon’ his way Sunday, November 11, 2012. Last year we attended the 22nd Annual Children’s Illustration Exhibit party at the R. Mark shot some video at the event and had planned to edit and release it shortly after our return. Unfortunately, that coincided with news that his uncle had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. A lot of personal projects were shelved.

The 23rd Annual Children’s Illustration Exhibit reception is taking place today. Unfortunately, we are unable to be there this time. We’re disappointed we won’t be able to spend time with our author and illustrator friends. Instead of attending this year’s event, Mark is finally getting around to editing the video he shot. Chip Kidd at TED: Designing books is no laughing matter. Knopf Books Associate Art Director Chip Kidd hits one out of the park with this TED Talk about children’s books and book design.

Our future depends on children’s books Wednesday, February 22, 2012. Much of what we become is shaped by the ideas we’re exposed to and the relationships of which we are a part. The stronger those foundations are from childhood, the better equipped we are to understand the people with whom we interact and the world around us. Childrens books are the tools that help us open the door to a childs natural curiosity, creativity and desire to connect, and are one of our strongest hopes for a great future. It’s not entirely surprising we never published this video, here, given we did have our mind on other things at the time. Repairs nearly complete Monday, November 21, 2011.

We’ve received a lot of email over the last few months about our long neglected website and podcast. Among other things, the audio files would no longer play. It turns out that was one of many other bigger problems with the site. It’s taken some time and there’s still more work to be done, however, I’m happy to report the site, audio files and feed are back in working order. Over the next few weeks, I’ll continue to repair the site, add comments that were trapped in moderation limbo and fix an array of bizarre characters that appear in the posts and comments.

If you include the core elements, in the proper order, using consistent punctuation, you will be fully equipped to create a list of works cited on your own.
